PONSETI SUITE

Commissioned by charity CW+ as part of their Arts in health programme. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital opened their dedicated department for the treatment of club foot - The Ponseti Suite. Named after the Dr. Ignacio Vives Ponseti who developed the method in 1948.

The Ponseti method uses gentle casting and stretching to gradually turn a baby's clubfoot into the correct position. Starting at birth, a series of 5-7 casts progressively correct the foot, followed by a stabilizing brace for several years. This non-surgical approach is a long-term treatment, typically starting in infancy and lasting 4-5 years. Meaning patients need to frequently visit the department as their treatment progresses.

Madeleine’s illustrations were designed to ease and distract patients during treatment, sparking conversations for staff and parents.

Drawing inspiration from foot muscles, the illustrations use colour to show treatment progress. Vibrant tones and bold shapes cater to different age groups, with infants loving geometric patterns and older kids enjoying finer details. The sensitive illustration subject holds deeper meaning, resulting in a final image resembling a lively flower, symbolising growth and development.
